Sandtray Compass Program

Sandtray Compass LOGO.png
Welcome to the Sandtray Compass Program! I developed this program with you in mind-seeking flexible humility, a growth mindset and encouragement to connect to your own North Star in the vastness of Sandtray experiences.

Why Choose the Sandtray Compass Program?

As there is no current national accrediting body for Sandtray Professionals, it’s important to know about your instructor, their training and experiences.
V. Fawn Colburn is a master’s level LPC-S, licensed since 2010.  Early on in her career, Fawn incorporated expressive arts with evidenced based practices, informed by her undergraduate degrees in Early Childhood Education and Human Development.
In 2017 she began attending formal sandtray trainings. In 2021 Fawn completed the Texas State San Marcos, Institute of Play Therapy Sandtray Certification training with instructors Dr. Linda Homeyer, Dr. Elizabeth Kjellstrand Hartwig and Marshall Lyles (who was also her small group leader for deeper work). Seeking further ways to use sandtray outside of therapy sessions, Fawn facilitated sandtray based research projects for counselors-in-training and student nurses which have been published as peer reviewed research articles. The projects have received positive feedback during presentations at state, national and international conferences.

What is the Sandtray Compass Program?

The program has four levels.
The first level, our North point on our professional compass, is designed to ground us in foundational counseling skills including reflection upon Trauma Informed Care Principles and awareness of Person Of the Sandtray Therapist (POST).
The second level, East, builds upon foundations to explore more advanced skills including external environments (setting up Sandtray spaces) and internal environments (neurobiology, personal histories) to discover the intersecting space of creation and growth.
The third level, South, creates opportunities for deeper practice experiences, including education on working with different populations, evidenced based theories and presenting case conceptualizations in a small group.
The final level, our West facing perspective, will expand our knowledge through Barudy and Dantagnan’s Three Block Systemic Traumatherapy as well as look at Sandtray use in different countries. This fourth level includes a capstone project, short presentations and certification.
