Supervision Philosophy and Approach

Functionality You Will Love

01

Discrimination Model

The Discrimination model  (DM)of supervision is the foundation for our shared time together. The DM model centers on three separate supervisory roles with three different supervision foci creating nine approaches that a supervisor must navigate at any moment during supervision (Bernard, 1979; Carnes-Holt et al., 2014). Within the DM (Bernard, 1979), supervisors attend to three separate foci related to supervisees’ skills; intervention, conceptualization, and personalization. Based on the foci that the supervisor is attending to, they will choose between the three roles consisting of counselor, teacher, and consultant to accomplish the goals of supervision (Bernard, 1979; Luke & Bernard, 2006).

02

Mindful Self Compassion

While my theoretical stance is primarily Mindful Self-Compassion (Neff, 2003b) when working with clients, I do also utilize skills found in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, (Neff & Tirch, 2013). Naturally, I view my supervisees through these lenses as well: seeking to gain awareness of mindfulness, common humanity and kindness while reducing self criticism, isolation and overidentification (Neff, 2003a).

03

Developmental Theories

Each person is unique yet also part of a larger narrative on our shared planet. Understanding stages of development can help inform opportunities for growth, challenge and resilience. Through our working relationship, I will seek to offer a similar process: encourage your growth emerging from your own developmental stage and self-awareness, challenge you to explore your own ideas of showing up professionally for yourself and your clients as you create your authentic professional identity and validate the resilience you already have within you as you move forward through your professional goals. I believe in an egalitarian relationship, upholding the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities.
